We charge $1795 to do the running around for you. We have small office based locations around the Metro Atlanta area as well. If you are looking to open open up a car lot based dealer, or are an out-of-state resident, we charge $2295.

So, If you use my service, you are looking at Project Approximate Total $5045.

Just be aware, depending on how fast or slow things move along, you will have to pay at least two months or more rent on your location before your license is actually issued.
So, about $5-6K or so to start things up. Then you want to think about inventory.

Inventory: As a used car dealer, you will need to purchase vehicles at wholesale prices from nationwide auctions (Manheim, Adesa, IAA, Copart, ACV, etc). The cost of your initial inventory will depend on the number and type of vehicles you choose to stock, which can range from $5,000 to $50,000 or more. This is something to think about as you go thru the process of getting your dealer license. It’s not really part of the up front cost to get licensed, but it’s something that you need to have a budget for at some point. And last but not least, you need to promote your vehicles.

Marketing and Advertising: Promoting your dealership is essential to attract customers. The cost of marketing can vary widely depending on the strategies you choose to employ, such as free online advertising, print ads, flyers, or social media campaigns. Expect to spend at least $500 to $2,000 annually on marketing efforts. One thing to remember, the less money you spend, the more time you have to spend. Time is money, so choose wisely. Its very difficult to really scale and grow a business, strictly off of word-of mouth, and it takes longer.

As you can see, the cost for a Georgia Dealer License, is not too expensive. Just imagine if you lived in Tennessee, where you have to have an 18 car lot location requirement to get a dealer License there!

Can I Get a Georgia Dealer License with a Felony? I get asked this question a lot, so I figured I would write a quick blog post. And yes, you can get a Georgia Dealer License with a felony on your record.

Starting a used car dealership can be an exciting opportunity for car enthusiasts, hobbyists, and entrepreneurs/investors. One of the min reason s why people want to legally operate a dealership and get a dealer license. So, if you have a felony on your record, you might be wondering if this will prevent you from getting a Georgia Dealer License. Well, yes and no.

In Georgia, the Used Motor Vehicle Dealer License is issued by the Georgia State Board of Used Motor Vehicle Dealers (SBUMVD). The application process involves a background check to ensure that applicants meet the requirements set forth by the state. However, having a felony on your record does not automatically disqualify you from obtaining a dealer license.

The SBUMVD will look at your background on a case-by-case basis. Factors that they consider include the nature of the felony, the time elapsed since the conviction, and any evidence of rehabilitation (after jail programs, etc). It is very important to be transparent about your criminal history when applying for a Georgia Dealer License, as failure to disclose accurate information may result in denial or revocation of your license. My understanding is that the SBUMVD focuses on certain types o f crimes. If you have any financial crimes, like credit card fraud, insurance fraud, identity theft or similar conditions, you most like will get denied a Georgia Dealer License. If you have a felony on your record and are interested in pursuing a Georgia Dealer License, here are some things you can do.

Do some research Georgia’s licensing requirements and regulations: Familiarize yourself with the specific requirements and regulations for obtaining a dealer license in Georgia. I have some of that here on my website. This will help you understand what the SBUMVD will be looking for during the application process. Get a list of all your misdemeanors, felonies, and arrests. You will need two attach documentation and explanations.
But the most important thing is to prepare a detailed explanation of your felony conviction(s): When applying for your dealer license, it’s essential to provide a clear and detailed explanation of your felony conviction. Include details about the circumstances, any rehabilitation efforts you have undertaken, and how you have changed since the conviction.
Gather supporting documentation: Usually getting a print out from the court tat had jurisdiction over your case is enough. However, you can gather any documents that demonstrate your rehabilitation, such as completion certificates for educational or vocational programs, and character references.

How to sell used cars without a Dealers License

How to sell used cars without a dealers license in any state in this country?  In this article I will tell you my tried and true method on how to sell used cars without a dealers license.  Most people start in the business this way, flipping cars in their neighborhood. If you have a joy for the business and/or a little ambition, you may try to increase your sales volume. You may go from 1 car a month sporadically, and wind up selling 3+ cars a month. Now most states will only allow you to sell up to 5 cars a year. So if you want to sell used cars without a dealers license, you have to get creative. In this article I will show you an alternate way to sell more volume of cars legally without getting a dealers license. And this works in every state too.

The Usual way of selling or flipping cars

Typically when you are just flipping cars without a dealers license, you take physical possession of the vehicle and the title, but you don’t actually sign the title as the new owner. I know plenty of guys who buy 3-4 cars week off Facebook Marketplace and sell them, back on Facebook MarketPlace! How are they doing this? Well they are not signing titles, or leaving any kind of “paper trail” of their transactions. This is operating in a very grey area of the law. Actually it’s illegal in most states. Once you have sold 5 vehicles (in most states) you are classified as operating as a used car dealer (so they expect you to be licensed). This is called “curbstoning” and “open title” method of selling cars, used by professional car flippers all over this country. But there is also a legal way to sell cars without a dealers license in whatever volume you like.

The Method

The best way I have found how to sell used cars without a dealers license is to set up multiple companies. A company that you control, can buy a vehicle and then sell it. Let that sink in. There is no state that bars you from having multiple companies. You can have LLC’s and Inc.’s and states do not restrict the number that one entity owns and/or controls. So, you see where I’m going with this. An entity is you and a corporation is an entity too, as far as the state is concerned. So an LLC or Corporation can buy and sell cars just like a human entity. So let’s say you want to sell 1 car a month. Once you sold 5 cars, you have already went past the “No Go” zone. You are half way thru the year and cannot legally sell anymore cars in your state. So what can you do instead? Set up 5 different LLCs, pertaining to relevant industries that rely on vehicles. Or you can be obscure in your naming.  If you don’t have an LLC, then start creating them. Most states charge you $100-175. Don’t create them all at once, but stagger them over at least 30 days apart. 

How to buy a car in your company name

Once you locate a vehicle that you want to buy, simply do all of things you normally do. You can buy from a private owner or you can buy from an auction like IAA. Whatever you do, check the vehicle condition, test drive, etc. Then you hand over the funds to the seller. The Seller will ask you your name. You give him the name of your LLC. He signs the title and hands the title to you to sign as the new owner. Now you have a choice here, you can immediately flip the cars (sell it without signing the title) or you can go the legit way. The legit way is you get insurance for the car, and register it at your local DMV in the name of your LLC. Yes, will pay sales tax and a registration fee, however the good news is you can deduct this on your taxes. You can also deduct the cost of storage, towing and the actual mileage on the car. So the legit way is to spend the upfront money to register the vehicle under your different companies. Rotate the usage so that each company is only buying selling 1 vehicle every 3-4 months. This way you say under the legal limit of 5 cars per year. If you are in a state that only allows 3 cars per year, yoo will need to set up more companies!

Now obviously this is not a long term solution. It can get a bit bulky to manage if you are really doing volume. Then it can be too much to keep up with…having 50 LLCs to buy and sell cars thru! Way too much. So, you will come to a point where you feel like you need a Dealer license to get to your next level of success. You will get some Dealer Plates with that upgrade, as well as be able to offer financing to your customers (and get some financing for your Dealership too). I can show and tell you how to sell used cars without a dealers license and you can make it work for you. This is easy to maintain if you are a causal car flipper and just sell 3-15 cars per year. You will need proof of address. I have a person that provides a Georgia residential mailing for you. You use it for 2 or 3 months until the process is completed and you get your Georgia Dealership up and running. This same person can create a lease for you as well, if you want that as well.
You can use this address to mail yourself a letter and perhaps change your bank statement or telephone bill. You will need these two proofs of address to get a temporary Georgia Driver License (when you come down for your first trip).
1. Temporarily changing your driver license to Georgia and taking the required 4 hour class (no test).
2. Background check, you have to be able to travel back to Georgia after your application is submitted, in order to do your background check.
This is on top of the regular set up expenses of $3.2 – 3.5K as I have listed in the set up expenses.
You can change your driver license back to your home state, after your Georgia Dealership is set up, and you receive your License.

  1. Georgia state has some of the lowest Dealer License start up costs in the country. The biggest reason for this, is you can operate out of zoned (approved) office locations and pay on the average of $300 a month for rent. Most other states require you to have at least a two (2) car lot like Florida, and some states even require you to have an office with 10 car lot location, like Maryland does. Tennessee Dealer License, requires an office with 18 car lots attached. This keeps a lot of people out of the car business, or searching for alternatives. The benefit of a Georgia Dealer License is the insurance is moderate. The costs will range depending on the level of insurance you get for your Dealership. But you can expect to from pay $1,500 and $2,800 a year depending on deductible and other options. Surety Bond will run you $300-$600 per year, not too bad.

2. Low cost of Maintenance is a big benefit of having your own Georgia Used Car Dealer License. After you get all set up, all you need to pay to maintain your license is your rent and telephone bill. It does cost you anywhere from $3,500 – $4,000 for your entire total cost set up, depending on various factors, but ongoing, you are looking at approximate $400 a month or so, to keep it all going. Essentially your office rent and telephone land line, which is required by the state. If you only put down a deposit on your insurance, then that residual gets rolled into your monthly maintenance costs.  The applicable annual zoning permits and license renewals are moderately priced ($100-$300). So, yes, you can own and operate a Georgia Use Car Dealership for $400-$500 a month, complete with 3 Dealer Plates.

3. Another great benefit of having a Georgia Dealer License is you have inexpensively priced reassignment forms. Many states like Delaware, New York can charge $10 a reassignment and even more. If you are like many Dealers, you also wholesale cars, and/or run cars thru the dealer auctions. You are not happy paying all that money, if you are selling 10+ cars a week. One of my New Jersey based business clients tells me he sells cars only thru Dealer Auctions, and he moves 30-50 cars per week. You do the math. Here in Georgia, you order a book (contains 20 forms) of reassignment forms for like $20, and it comes to your offices.

The wonderful thing about having a Dealer License issued from Georgia is you can operate it from any other state, as long as you are not trying to open up a physical retail location outside of Georgia (ie, your home state).  The benefit of having a Georgia Dealer License is much easier to see, particularly if you are from a state that requires a much larger financial start up (like Maryland). If you are in the state of Georgia, obviously it will be easy as well, because we usually can find a custom office close by you as well, if you require that service. It’s obvious that most people reading this article are in the state of Georgia and just want to weigh the benefits of getting their own Dealership, versus some other kind of Dealer Network program…where you are just a representative of another company and use their credentials to buy/sell cars. However, many of my clients are from out of state. If you are researching this topic, then you are most likely, considering the cost, ease of operation and other factors in your decision. I would like to point out that having your own dealership gives you the control you want and need with your own Dealership. You control the dealer plates, titles and all the things that matter to you. You control the money. Owning a Dealership gives you protection in the form of  dealership insurance and your surety bond. You get to be able to buy and sell and as many cars as you like regardless of what state you actually are in. If you are just starting out, an affordable Dealership in Georgia gives you the time to grow and expand at your own pace, without the large overhead of a car lot based Dealership. Once you have been operating out of your office location and feel like you have out grown it, you can easily transfer your dealer license to another approved location in the state of Georgia. If you are an out of state License holder, then obviously you are more inclined to operate the smallest financial foot print as possible.

What are the Total Set-up Costs?
Well, $1795 is my fee for the service  (filling all your applications/paperwork and managing the entire process for you).Your other start-up expenses will be between $3,200 and $3,7000 (insurance, surety bond, business license, zoning, location, etc). So, plan on your your total start-up expenses to be approximately $5,500. You receive 3 Dealer plates to start.
Note: If you are setting up a Car Lot based Dealership or you are Out-of-State resident, my fee is $2295

What are the Monthly ongoing Expenses?
Your basic Georgia Dealer License (100 square foot office) is $325 or so monthly depending on what city location, and your phone is $60-$75/monthly.
Any other monthly expense is whatever is left over from your insurance. For example, if your insurance and bond is $1800 for the year, and you put down $1000, then what left over ($800) will be part of your ongoing monthly expenses.

Note: 👉🏿 If you are out of state, getting a Georgia Dealer license would require two trips to Atlanta, Georgia area at additional cost. If you are not willing to temporarily change your driver license to Georgia, then this won’t work for you. Your insurance will be more than double the cost (around $4,500 per year) and you will not be able to get your Dealer Plates.
You will need proof of address. I have a person that provides a Georgia residential mailing for you. You use it for 2 or 3 months until the process is completed and you get your Georgia Dealership up and running. This same person can create a lease for you as well, if you want that as well.
You can use this address to mail yourself a letter and perhaps change your bank statement or telephone bill. You will need these two proofs of address to get a temporary Georgia Driver License (when you come down for your first trip).
1. Temporarily changing your driver license to Georgia and taking the required 4 hour class (no test).
2. Background check, you have to be able to travel back to Georgia after your application is submitted, in order to do your background check.
This is on top of the regular set up expenses of $3.2 – 3.5K as I have listed in the set up expenses.
You can change your driver license back to your home state, after your Georgia Dealership is set up, and you receive your License.
